Letters and Sounds is a synthetic phonics program that systematically teaches children to read sounds and then blend sounds to read whole words. Letters and Sounds is an evidence-based program and provides your child with the necessary skills to tackle increasingly complex vocabulary. At Karrinyup Primary School, students commence Phase 1 of the program in Kindy and complete Phase 6 in Year 3.

The English language has 26 letters, 44 phonemes and 175+ graphemes. So what does all that mean…

Phoneme – the smallest spoken unit of a work (the/f/ in fish)

Grapheme – a written representation of a phoneme (the letter f)

Digraph – two letters that go together to make one sound (/sh/)

Trigraph – three letters…tch, igh

Blending – pushing sounds together to make a word

Segmenting – pulling words apart into individual sounds
